At Florida Injury & Wellness Center in Wesley Chapel, our health and wellness practice is dedicated to providing comprehensive care, including chiropractic services, physical therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture. Today, we’re focusing on an important topic that affects many individuals: spinal headaches.
What is a Spinal Headache?
A spinal headache is a type of headache that occurs following a procedure that involves the spinal canal, such as a lumbar puncture or spinal anesthesia. These procedures can lead to a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the spinal canal into the surrounding tissue, resulting in a decrease in CSF pressure, which causes headaches.
Causes of Spinal Headaches
Spinal headaches primarily occur after:
- A lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
- Spinal block or epidural anesthesia, commonly used during childbirth
- Other spinal procedures that penetrate the dura mater
Symptoms of a Spinal Headache
The main symptom of a spinal headache is a dull, throbbing headache that varies in intensity. This headache:
- Is typically felt in the front or back of the head
- Worsens when sitting or standing
- Improves when lying down
- Can be accompanied by nausea, neck stiffness, dizziness, and sensitivity to light
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis
Diagnosis usually involves reviewing the patient’s medical history, especially recent procedures involving the spine, and a physical examination.
Treatment
Most spinal headaches resolve on their own within a few days. Treatment may include:
- Bed rest
- Hydration
- Caffeine
- Pain relievers
- In severe cases, an epidural blood patch may be required
